At Clair Hogan family Chiropractic our techniques for helping kids with neurodevelopment conditions are based on a program in the US called intersect for kids.
Many children who are diagnosed with conditions such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and various other autistic spectrum disorder and learning disorders have a basic underlying problem with sensory intergration.
Sensory integration is the ability to take in, process organize and assimilate sensory information so that we feel comfortable and secure; we then can respond appropriately to given situations and demands. All forms of learning occur through this process. Children with sensory intergration disorder (SID) experience a “disconnect” between the brain and the body (PNS and CNS) and have difficulty processing sensory information. Two rarely known senses are vestibular and proprioceptive sensations, both of which commonly function improperly among children with the above disorders.
Most children diagnosed with SID seek help from an occupational therapist specializing in SID. However knowing the great impact chiropractic plays on the occulomotor, vestibular and proprioceptive systems, not to mention the entire nervous system, chiropractic care is a vital component in the treatment of these children.
Individualised Chiropractic Treatment Programs:
Each patient is evaluated for vertebral subluxations. Subluxations can result in a nervous system “disconnect” between the brain and the body. They can also contribute to an atypical or immature development of the nervous system which can lead to various developmental delays or chronic health issues. Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders and adults with chronic health problems have a depressed immune system; chiropractic care is known to support immune system function.
Neurointegrative Exercise Programs
Movement through space is essential for proper areas of brain development; particularly important is the movement of creeping and crawling on all fours. Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders have delays in reaching various developmental milestones or have never reached them. These children may also have retained primitive reflexes, reflexes that we are born with and that should be inhibited by no later than the first year of life. Not reaching these various developmental milestones or retaining various primitive reflexes will impede the progress of higher and more sophisticated areas of brain development. This will result in poor motor, social, and academic learning. special exercises to promote proper development of neuropathways essential for learning and navigating through life. These specific exercises also help to develop, or properly regulate, the sensory processing system.
The techniques used at Clair Hogan family Chiropractic for children are very specific and very gentle.
