Chiropractic is based on the body’s ability to self regulate and heal itself primarily through the nervous system.
The brain and nervous system control every function of the body. How we digest food, when we blink, how our kindneys filter our blood or if we can feel pain or other sensations.
As the spinal column encases and protects the spinal cord and nervous system, any changes to the structure of the spine can lead to nerve irritation altering the effects of the nervous system. This is what chiropractors term a subluxation.
You may not even be aware you have a subluxation. You may or may not have pain.
Subluxations can occur in three different ways:
Physical: These include postural changes, lifting, carring, car accidents, reptitive tasks at work or home, growing, sports we play and other injuries or falls, or even the birthing process.
Chemical: Different foods we eat, toxins in the enviornment, medication we take, if we drink alcohol or smoke all have an effect on how healthy the body and nervous sytem is wich feeds back to the spine via a ‘visero-somatic response’.
Emotional: Different thoughts and emotions we have are formed in the brain. Different nerve pathways and involved with these emotions and these can have an effect on how well the spine functions.
Subluxations cause changes to how the nervous system functions. This will affect how the body works.
The role of chiropracitc is to remove subluxations via an adjustment. this allows the nervous system to be free from interferance allowing the body to work optimally. This is of course in combination with good nutrition, exercise, and a good mental attitude.
